As global investors took a bleaker view of the economy, stocks and interest rates tumbled. The Dow Jones average fell 265 points and all other major indexes fell more than 2 percent. Investigative journalist Webster Tarpley said this is evidence the stimulus and other government efforts have failed. Some of the money has aided the banks, but failed to bolster the greater economy.

A day after the results of the UK general election were released, there was still no decision on a new government.

Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat leader, may have finished third but he’s currently finding he’s got more power than he thought.

Both the Conservative Party and the ruling Labour Party have made offers to him to try to join a coalition.

Agriculture is easily the most distorted sector, with high tariffs and, in developed countries at least, large amounts of government subsidies through price supports and direct payments. On the other hand, developing countries, who have a comparative advantage in these products, cannot afford to subsidize their agriculture sector and face prohibitive tariffs for their products abroad. The powerful agriculture lobby groups, particularly in the large developed countries, make reform politically difficult. Chris Edwards, Sallie James and Dan Ikenson discuss the inequities of American farm policies.
